Our tradition – the highest quality
Founded in 1829 by Johann Wilhelm Zanders in Bergisch Gladbach near Cologne (Germany), the company still operates the Gohrsmühle paper mill there today with around 380 employees. The product range includes the premium brand Chromolux, introduced in 1958 – one of the world’s leading paper brands.
Our history
The Zanders paper mill remained in the hands of the Zanders family for around 150 years. Constantly growing, Zanders expanded its production at the Gohrsmühle mill into art paper in 1895 and introduced Chromolux in 1958. Following its listing on the stock exchange in 1980, International Paper became majority shareholder in 1989. In 2002 the Finnish fresh forest fibre board manufacturer M-real acquired the company. When the M-real group was rebranded Metsä Board in 2012, the company’s name was changed to Metsä Board Zanders GmbH.
In May 2015, Munich-based holding company mutares AG acquired the company, which once again produced its high quality grades of paper under the name of Zanders GmbH. On 1 December 2018, a Scandinavian investor group led by Terje Haglund acquired the company, which has since been renamed Zanders Paper GmbH.

It meets the requirements of manufacturers of beverages, including spirits, sparkling wine, wine, water and beer; grocery and luxury food products; tobacco products, as well as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Its potential end-uses range from high-end to standard products, including specialised segments such as individual craft beer breweries.
Site and Machinery

Over many years significant knowledge, equipment, utilities and logistics infrastructure have been built up at the site in Bergsich Gladbach, which is located less than half an hour from Cologne city center. High environmental standards were met at all times, setting new standards for the industry in this area as well.
The heart of the facility is the paper production equipment and the modern logistics systems – including a logistics center just south of the main site – for moving product to and from the area. With a total capacity of 325,000 t/a this is one of the leading paper-making plants in Germany and has extensive test and development capabilities. Also noteworthy are the power plant, which provides the required energy directly onsite, as well as the autonomous water supply and its own wastewater treatment plant.
